Labor Day 20060902
Dear China Friends,
I thought you might be interested in Labor Day since it is a part of Western
Culture. It is observed on the first Monday in September throughout the
United States and Canada. It is a holiday honoring working people. In
other parts of the world it is observed on May 1st.
You might be surprised as to what brought about this day. In ancient times
physical labor was looked down upon. It was reserved only for slaves or the
lower class. However, back in the first century the Bible spoke of work as
being honorable.
For even when we were with you, we gave you this rule: 揑f a man will not
work, he shall not eat. We hear that some among you are idle. They are not
busy; they are busybodies. Such people we command and urge in the Lord Jesus
Christ to settle down and earn the bread they eat. (II Thessalonians
3:10-12)
He who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing
something useful with his own hands, that he may have something to share
with those in need.(Ephesians 4:28).
The Puritans who came to America to seek religious freedom were known for
their Work Ethic based on what the Bible had to say about the value of work.
But they also made provision for those truly unable to work who needed
charity.
In my own work life I have had many jobs: Special teacher, Educational
Director, Jewelry Salesmen, Boeing Analyst and English Teacher in China for
5 ?years., Hopefully this has made some contribution to the welfare of
society. I trust that the jobs you have during your lifetime will
contribute to building a better world.
Labor Day marks the end of summer vacation and the beginning of the school
year. So Labor Day is the last free day of fun for the student and a day of
relaxation for the laborer. You might enjoy the following websites:

My health continues to improve, but I still have to be careful with my
balance. I no longer use a cane and go on walks to strengthen my legs. I
hope all goes well with you.
Your friend,
Tom A.
